The Nigerian tomato Farmers and market has experienced a significant price drop in recent months, leading to significant losses for farmers. The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) President, Abayomi Monilare, has urged farmers to adopt best practices to mitigate these losses.
The price of a crate of tomatoes plummeted from N50,000 to N70,000 in January and May to N12,000 in August. This dramatic decline has left farmers struggling to cover their production costs, including labor and chemicals.
The sudden rise in tomato prices earlier this year prompted many farmers to switch to tomato cultivation, hoping for substantial profits. However, the abundant rainfall and increased production led to a glut in the market, causing prices to crash.

While consumers are benefiting from lower prices, farmers are bearing the brunt of the losses. Many are struggling to recover their investments and are considering abandoning tomato farming altogether.
To mitigate losses, Monilare advised farmers to carefully calculate their planting times to avoid harvesting during periods of glut. He also emphasized the importance of government intervention, such as providing subsidies for agro inputs and investing in cold storage facilities.
As the tomato season progresses, farmers are hoping for a price recovery. However, the continued influx of tomatoes from other regions may further pressure prices.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by Nigerian farmers, who are often at the mercy of market fluctuations and lack of government support. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of agriculture in Nigeria and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
